The 118th German Athletics Championships were held in Nuremberg from July 20-22, 2018 .
Framework
The main venue was the Max Morlock Stadium . The infrastructure in the stadium and on the side square have been improved, the system for the pole vault decisions has been placed on the grass area in the interior of the stadium to make it more attractive. As with the German championships in 2014 and 2015 , a competition was held on the evening before the main event on the Nuremberg main market in the city center. That year it was the shot put .
On the first main day, Saturday, heavy rain at times impaired the event, a circumstance that did not exactly promote performance. On Sunday, however, the weather conditions were much better.
Athletic performance
Overall, the performance was at a good level in terms of the standard of German athletics. According to strict international standards, there are considerable deficits in the men's running disciplines, in the men's triple jump and in the hammer throw of both sexes. In contrast, the javelin throwers presented themselves very strongly in the men's category - Andreas Hofmann with a new championship record, but also behind with great distances - and Pamela Dutkiewicz in the 100 meter hurdles - also with a championship record. Some new names came to the fore, such as Kevin Kranz over 100 meters , who was able to defeat long-time German champion Julian Reus for the first time, or Jessica-Bianca Wessolly over 200 meters with her first championship title. Numerous final nomination questions with regard to the European Championships in Berlin were still open, corresponding sporting decisions were made with standard compliance or placement of the relevant candidates, which provided a basis for the final nomination by the association.

As usual, various competitions were not held as part of this event for reasons of time or organization. In 2018 these were:
- Cross-country run : Ohrdruf , March 10th
- 100 km road race : Rheine , March 10th
- Half marathon : Hanover , April 8th
- 20 km street walking : Naumburg , April 14th
- Marathon run : as part of the Düsseldorf Marathon on April 29th
- 10,000 m : Pliezhausen , May 12th
- Long relay : Rostock , July 29th as part of the German Youth Championships - women: 3 × 800 m / men: 3 × 1000 m
- All-around competition: Wesel , 25./26. August - women heptathlon / men: decathlon
- Mountain run : Ilsenburg , September 1st
- 10 km road race : Bremen , September 2nd
- 50 km street walking : Aschersleben , October 14th
The lane walking event, which was actually planned for June 3rd, was canceled this year because there was no organizer.
