The 9th German Athletics Championships on September 2, 1906 in Hanover were the first in which almost all disciplines were held at the same place and on the same day. Exceptions were the 100 km street walking on June 3rd and the 40 km marathon on April 15th. Both disciplines took place in Berlin . However, the marathon was not officially part of the championship competitions until 1924, but was carried out independently as the "German Marathon".

The competition program expanded only gradually. Compared to the previous year, the long jump was added. It is noteworthy that the Olympic Intermediate Games held in Athens in the spring of that year had more than twice as many disciplines. B. a long distance run over 5 miles, the marathon , triple jump , pole vault , javelin throw and two walking competitions on the track.
