The 1st German Athletics Championships were held in Hamburg in three disciplines on two different dates in 1898 . In addition, on July 3, a marathon over 40 km took place in Leipzig for the second time after 1897 , but - until 1924 - it was not officially part of the championship competitions, but was carried out independently as the "German Marathon".
