The 66th German Athletics Championships were held from August 5th to 7th, 1966 in the Lower Saxony Stadium in Hanover .
The women's 3 × 800 m relay has been added to the competition program . On the other hand, the 200 m hurdles , which was no longer part of the international competition programs , was no longer held.
The following three records were set:
- 800 meters - European record by Franz-Josef Kemper with 1: 44.9 min
- 400 meter hurdles - German record by Gerd Loßdörfer with 49.9 s (set)
- 3 × 1000 m relay - German record for club relay through Prussia Münster in the line-up of Franz-Josef Kemper , Wolf-Jochen Schulte-Hillen , Harald Norpoth with 7: 01.2 min. This time is to this day (July 2016) the German record and thus the longest-lived German record ever.
