Hein-Direck New

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hein-Direck Neu (born February 13, 1944 in Bad Kreuznach ; † April 14, 2017 in Wiesbaden ) was a German discus thrower who wore the national jersey of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1964 to 1982 in 58 competitions.

Career

His career began again at USC Mainz . From 1970 to 1978 he started for Bayer 04 Leverkusen , and from 1981 he returned to Mainz. In 1963 he achieved his first final position in the German championships with a sixth place in the shot put , in 1965 Neu took second place in the discus throw, until 1977 he achieved a placement among the top three throwers in 13 consecutive years, winning six championship titles, losing in 1977 he only the US Olympic champion Mac Wilkins , who was eligible to start one season for the LAC Quelle Fürth .

At the European Championships in 1966 , Neu finished eleventh, eight years later he again reached the final of the European Championships in Rome and was twelfth in the end. Neu took part in the Olympic Games three times for the Federal Republic of Germany: in 1968 in Mexico he was ninth, in 1972 in Munich he was eliminated from the qualification, and in 1976 in Montreal he was twelfth. In 1967 and 1970 he won the silver medal at the Universiade .

In 1967 Neu was the first thrower from the Federal Republic of Germany to exceed the 60-meter mark, and by 1970 he had increased the German record four times to 63.98 m. From 1971 the record improved by Dirk Wippermann stood at 65.88 m. On May 27, 1977 Neu increased this record in Bremerhaven to 68.08 m. This record was only exceeded in 1988 by Wolfgang Schmidt .

On May 21, 1978, Hein-Direck Neu and the shot putter Joachim Krug were convicted of anabolic steroids in Hanover. Until the end of the division of Germany, Neu and Krug were the last two athletes from the top German athletes who had positive results. In an interview with the Freiburg Sports Medicine Evaluation Commission for a scientific report on the sports medicine specialist Armin Klümper , Neu stated that until around 1970, officials of the German Athletics Association advised athletes to use anabolic steroids, which, like miners, are faced with high energy demands. Klümper even prescribed anabolic steroids for athletes on the plane on their way back from an international match, Neu said. His descriptions make it clear that a real, legally effective clarification on doping of Freiburg provenance could not have taken place. In addition, in the contemporary witness interview, Neu reported on the idea that apparently prevailed in the 1970s that athletes could have had the biochemist Manfred Donike determine individual withdrawal times for anabolic steroids. Neu also made it clear that many former athletes with anabolic steroids abuse wanted systematic health care that sport and politics have not yet offered.

Neu completed a degree in sports and English during his career. His career in school service lasted 35 years at the Bischöflichen Willigis-Gymnasium , where he made it up to the senior student council .
