USC Mainz
The USC Mainz ( University Sports Club Mainz ) is a German sports club based in Mainz . For a long time it was considered to be one of the most productive German athletics clubs, whose athletes achieved top international titles and world records.
history
It was founded on September 9, 1959 by Berno Wischmann primarily for the students of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .
Around 50 USC athletes have made their mark at the Olympic Games, World and European Championships. The decathletes were particularly successful for decades. They dominated at times and won all medals at the European Championships in Budapest in 1966 with Werner von Moltke , Jörg Mattheis and Horst Beyer . Nine athletes on the club's all-time top list alone achieved more than 8,000 points, with Siegfried Wentz (8762 points in 1983) and Guido Kratschmer (1980 world record with 8667 points) at the top .
The most successful athlete of the club with two Olympic victories, however, is the all-rounder, sprinter and long jumper Ingrid Mickler-Becker (1968 Olympic champion in the pentathlon and 1972 Olympic champion in the 4 x 100 meter relay and 1971 European champion in the long jump).
The most successful athletes in the recent past are the pole vaulter Carolin Hingst (eighth of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing) and the sprinter Marion Wagner (2001 world champion in the 4 x 100 meter relay). With her and discus thrower Lars Riedel (1991 and 1993) USC athletes have won three world championship titles so far. There are also five European championship titles, a total of 65 international medals and 260 victories at German championships.
The basketball players at USC Mainz played from the 1968/69 season to the 1974/75 season in the Basketball Bundesliga ( BBL ) of the German Basketball Federation ( DBB ). As a finalist by winning the DBB Cup in 1971, the USC Mainz played in FIBA -Europapokal Cup Winners' Cup in 1971/72 against the Italian Cup winners AP Fides Partenope Napoli ( Italy ).
