Berno Wischmann
Berno Wischmann (born December 26, 1910 in Tondern , Kingdom of Prussia , † September 25, 2001 in Bad Sobernheim ) was a German athlete, university professor and official in the German Athletics Association .
Act
Wischmann was a graduate of the German University for Physical Education in Berlin and was part of the Rommel General Staff in North Africa. After the war he was successful as a track and field trainer at Rot-Weiß Koblenz and was appointed from this position in the French zone as a university sports teacher at the University of Mainz . It was here that he first developed a sports teacher training program . In 1958, Wischmann received his doctorate in Mainz. phil. with a thesis on The Problem of Courage in Physical Education . At times, Wischmann ran the institute as an independent university and in the 1960s was able to compete with the German Sport University Cologne in terms of quality. Wischmann was the founder and long-time dean of the sports department at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .
In the 1950/51 season, Wischmann coached 1. FSV Mainz 05 from the 1st to the 6th game . He was then replaced by Hans Geiger .
On September 9, 1959, he founded the Mainz University Sports Club . On the initiative of Wischmann, the foreign trainer school of the German Athletics Association was founded in Mainz, which has been training athletes from developing countries since 1974. He was the supervisor and head coach of the German athletics team at the Olympic Games in Melbourne , Rome , Tokyo , Mexico City and Munich . Wischmann was for many years the chairman of the Federal Sports Commission of the FDP . In this capacity he worked closely with Liesel Westermann (his successor in office), Arnd Krüger , his deputy, Detlef Parr and Wolfgang Mischnick , as sports spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group.
Berno Wischmann was still an active athlete even in old age and won many senior world championship titles in hurdles, pole vault, discus, javelin and hammer throw, most recently three titles at the world championships in Durban, South Africa in the M85 age group. As a book author, sports teacher and senior athlete, he always tried to get older people in particular enthusiastic about sports.
The “Berno-Wischmann-Haus” sports and coaching school is also located on the university grounds. In his hometown of Kirn , the TuS 1862 Kirn eV sports facility was renamed “Berno-Wischmann-Stadion”. The Sports Science Society of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz eV has been awarding the "Berno Wischmann Medal" for the best sports science examination paper every year since 2002.
