Michael Sauer (born August 27, 1941 in Recklinghausen ) is a former German triple jumper and journalist .

Career

Michael Sauer grew up in Fulda in East Hesse . As a 17-year-old footballer with the FV 1910 Horas and the Fuldaer Turnerschaft from 1848 , he unexpectedly set a Hessian youth record with a width of 13.63 m in the triple jump and found this athletics discipline . As a soldier he started for TSV 1860 Munich , for which he won his first title at the indoor championships in 1963 with a width of 15.34 m. At the beginning of his studies , Sauer switched to USC Mainz , in whose jersey he won another 18 championship titles (open-air and indoor) between 1963 and 1978. At the indoor championships in 1968 he also won the long jump with 7.70 m. His best outdoor distance is 16.65 m, set up in 1967. In the hall he set two world records in addition to a series of national and European records, namely 1965 with 16.35 m and 1968 with 16.77 m.

Sauer won the university in 1967 and took part in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , where he narrowly missed the triple jump final with a width of 16.02 m . He was used 54 times in international athletics competitions. Especially in indoor competitions he achieved good placements: at the European Championships in 1966 he was second with 16.35 m, at the European Championships in 1968 he was fifth with 16.37 m, at the European Championships in 1968 he was seventh with 15.86 m, in the At the European Championships in 1969 he was fourth with 15.89 m, at the European Championships in 1970 he was fourth with 16.39 m, at the European Championships in 1971 he was eighth with 15.94 m and at the European Championships in 1972 sixth with 16.27 m. In 1974 he was awarded the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Prize by the German Athletics Association .

After his last German indoor championships in 1979, the newspapers called the 37-year-old “ Methuselah among the hops”. Later on there were also various senior titles at national and international level. Sauer was president of the Mainz University Sports Club from 1993 to 1997, received honorary membership in 2009 and has been chairman of the sponsoring association for USC Mainz since November 2012.

After various internships with newspapers, his professional career led him to Südwestfunk and in 1971 to ZDF . There he began as personal advisor to ZDF director Karl Holzamer and later headed a weekly sports magazine for children called Pfiff from 1975 to 1984 . At the beginning of 1985 he became head of volunteer training at ZDF and was broadcasting director at ZDF from mid-1985 until his retirement in 2001. In 2004, the retired and reserve colonel served as a press staff officer at SFOR in Sarajevo as part of an eight-month military exercise . From 1996 to October 2011 he was Vice President of the Association of Reservists of the German Armed Forces and editor of the security policy monthly magazine Loyal . From November 2011 to March 2016 he was chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate regional group of the reservist association. Sauer is an honorary member of the Presidium and Honorary Chairman of the RLP regional group of the reservists' association. From 2008 to 2014 he held a teaching position in sports history at the University of Mainz . Sauer is the author of numerous fitness books.

In 1997 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon; In 2016 the German Armed Forces Cross of Honor in gold.
