Werner Konrad Graf von Moltke (born May 24, 1936 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ; † July 29, 2019 in Nieder-Olm , Rhineland-Palatinate ) was a German athlete and sports official. From 1997 to 2012 he was President of the German Volleyball Association (DVV) and from 1989 to 1997 Vice President of the German Athletics Association (DLV).

Life

Werner von Moltke came from the Mecklenburg noble family Moltke . He started for TSV Ellwangen , the Stuttgarter Kickers and the University Sports Club Mainz . With a height of 1.90 m, he had a competition weight of 90 kg. In 1958, 1966 and 1968 he was German champion in the decathlon . At the European Championships in Belgrade in 1962 he won the silver medal - beaten by only four points by the then world record holder, the Russian Vasily Kuznetsov - and the decathlon title at the European Championships in Budapest in 1966 . At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he was eliminated after the second competition, the long jump. Von Moltke achieved his personal best in December 1966 with 7849 points.

Von Moltke completed a degree in physical education at the University of Mainz . From 1966 to 1991 he was responsible for the sports policy of the sports goods manufacturer Adidas and for many years ran a sports shop in his place of residence in Nieder-Olm near Mainz. From 1989 to 1997 he was Vice President of the German Athletics Association. From 1997 to 2012 he was President of the German Volleyball Association.

He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (2005), the Silver Laurel Leaf (1967) and the Golden Ribbon of the Berlin Sports Press (1966). In 1984 Moltke initiated the Club of the Best . On the eve of the DVV Cup final in 2014 , he received the Volleyball Award as DVV Honorary President, which has been presented since 2006.

Moltke was divorced and had three children. One of his sons is Werner jun. , the founder of the German Darts Corporation , later PDC Europe . Von Moltke died on July 29, 2019 at the age of 83 in Nieder-Olm, Rhineland-Hesse , where he had lived for over 40 years.
