Arthur Abele (2014)

Arthur Abele (born July 30, 1986 in Mutlangen ) is a German decathlete . His greatest success so far was winning the European Championship title in Berlin in 2018 .

Life

In 2005 the athlete starting for TSV Hüttlingen in Kaunas became Vice Junior European Champion with 7634 points. In 2007 he won the all- around meeting in Ratingen with a personal best of 8269 points and thus qualified for the World Championships in Osaka . There he finished ninth with 8243 points.

In 2008 he finished second in Ratingen and qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing with 8372 points . There he had to give up due to an injury.

At the end of 2008 Arthur Abele moved from SSV Ulm 1846 within the Württemberg Athletics Association to VfL Sindelfingen . At a height of 1.84 m, his competition weight is 80 kg. His strongest disciplines are the hurdles sprint and the 1,500 meter run.

In 2009 he was out of shape due to an injury, so he failed to qualify for the World Championships in Berlin.

At the end of 2012 Abele moved back to SSV Ulm 1846. After years of bad luck with injuries and unfinished all-around battles, successes returned in the summer of 2013. In June, the decathlete scored 8151 points, and he won the German All-Around Championships in Lage with 8251 points. In 2014 he finished fifth at the European Championships in Zurich .

In 2016 Abele won in Ratingen with 8605 points, which was a new personal and world annual best. At the Olympic Games in Rio he finished 15th with 8013 points.

On 16./17. June 2018 Abele won his first decathlon after the Olympic Games in Ratingen with 8481 points. Until then, he had only been able to contest eight competitions since his first victory in Ratingen in 2007 due to injuries. On August 8, 2018, he became European champion in the decathlon at the European Championships in Berlin with 8,431 points.

Due to persistent problems in the ankle, Abele had to take a break for the entire season in 2019.
