Course of competition

The favorite was the French world champion from 2017 and Olympic runner-up from 2016 Kevin Mayer. But he produced three invalid attempts in the long jump and did not start the next discipline, the shot put . After the European Championships, Mayer set a new world record in Talence in September . With the two Germans Rico Freimuth as vice world champion and Kai Kazmirek - third in the World Cup - two top athletes were not among the participants due to injuries. The medal candidates now primarily included the German Arthur Abele, European Championship fifth in 2014 , the reigning European champion Thomas Van der Plaetsen from Belgium and the Russian World Cup fifth in 2015 Ilya Schkurenjow. However, Van der Plaetsen also went into the competition battered.

In the first discipline, the 100-meter run , Kevin Mayer showed that he was in excellent shape. He ran the fastest time with 10.64 s. Just behind was the young Brit Tim Duckworth with 10.65 s and the Estonian Karl Robert Saluri - 10.68 s. Abele also ran a good time in fourth with 10.86 seconds, equal to the Norwegian Martin Roe and the French Ruben Gado.

In the long jump , the second exercise, four athletes - the German Mathias Brugger and the three French Mayer, Gado and Romain Martin - remained without a valid attempt and thus had no chance of a good placement in the final ranking. The more than 100 meters thick Roe - 7.61 m - and Duckworth - 7.57 m - achieved the best distances. Shkurenjow and Belarusian Juryj Jaremitsch followed with 7.55 m each. The next best results were also just behind. Abele achieved 7.42 m and thus kept his prospects. In the interim ranking, Duckworth had taken the lead with 1892 points. Roe was second, 24 points behind. Roe, Jaremitsch, Abele and the Italian Simone Cairoli also had more than 1800 points in the following ranks.

The best shot putter was Brugger, who continued without points after his long jump. With 15.92 m he was 27 centimeters in front of the Belarusian Wital Schuk and 28 centimeters in front of Abele. Roe also made his claim as fourth with 15.48 m. The Norwegian now took the lead in the overall standings ahead of Abele, Saluri and Duckworth. These four athletes were only separated by 77 points. Schuk was sixth behind Sweden's Fredrik Samuelsson.

The performance in the high jump was at a high level. The best decathlete here was Duckworth, who jumped 2.17 m and thus collected many valuable points. The German Niklas Kaul and Samuelsson followed with 2.08 m. For the first time, Van der Plaetsen, who had not been able to call up his potential until then, also showed his performance with 2.05 m. A total of fourteen decathletes mastered 2.02 m or more, including Shkurenjow. Abele, on the other hand, only crossed 1.93 m - a normal achievement for him. He was fourth in the interim standings, 183 points behind Duckworth, who was now leading again. Roe and Samuelsson were also more than 100 points behind Duckworth.

After the 400-meter run, the field moved closer together again. Gado, who like Brugger continued after his three invalid attempts in the long jump, achieved the best time here with 47.65 s. Then came Brugger - 47.86 s, Abele - 48.01 s, Saluri - 48.26 s - and Schuk - 48.41 s. Roe - 49.42 s - and Duckworth - 49.87 s - lagged significantly behind here. The Briton nevertheless retained his lead. With 4380 points he was still 95 points ahead of Abele, who was now second and who had his strengths especially on the second day. Roe followed, just three more points behind. On the next places were Samuelsson - 149 P behind Duckworth, Saluri - 167 P - and Cairoli - 164 P.

The fastest hurdle sprinter was Abele, who was the only decathlete to stay under 14 seconds with 13.94 seconds. The Spaniard Jorge Ureña scored 14.39 s in second, Shkurenjow 14.44 s in third and Duckworth 14.55 s in fourth. Roe lost a lot of ground with 15.31 s. Duckworth remained at the top of the overall standings. He was now only eighteen points ahead of Abele. Samuelsson followed, 168 points behind Duckworth, Cairoli, Ureña and Roe. The distances to Samuelsson were very close. There were only 79 points between third-placed Sweden and Saluri in tenth place.

Kaul, who was already strong in the high jump, achieved the greatest distance in the discus throw with 46.30 m. The gaps behind them were very close. The Czech Jan Doležal, the Pole Paweł Wiesiołek, Schkurenjow, Schuk, Abele and the Estonian Maicel Uibo surpassed the 45-meter mark. Roe with 42.22 m and Duckworth with 41.94 m lost many points here. Abele now took the lead, with 6042 points he was the only one of the participants to have more than 6000 points on his account. Duckworth was now 53 points behind in second. Samuelsson stayed third, he was already 180 P behind Abele. Shkurenjow, Schuk, the Dutchman Pieter Braun and Roe followed just behind him. There were just 58 points between Samuelsson and Roe.

The eighth exercise, the pole vault , once again brought about significant changes. Shkurenjow convinced as the best with 5.30 m. Behind Gado, who jumped 5.20 m, Duckworth also showed with 5.10 m that he was still to be expected. Uibo and the Frenchman Romain Martin also mastered 5.10 m. Abele was clearly behind with 4.60 m and thus also lost his lead. Duckworth was back in front now. Shkurenev had taken second place seventy points behind. Abele was 98 points behind Duckworth third. Schuk now held fourth place, his gap to Abele was 112 points. Then Uibo, Roe and Samuelsson followed.

With 68.10 m, the best result in the javelin throw , Abele made up for his weakness from the pole vault. Kaul was not far behind with 67.72 m. Schuk followed with 66.19 m and Roe with 64.53 m. Shkurenjow - 59.13 m - and especially Duckworth - 54.78 m - lost valuable points here, so that Abele took the lead again. He was able to book 7692 P and was thus 102 P ahead of the second-placed Duckworth. Shkurenjow was third only five points behind Duckworth. Schuk was also only 39 points behind the British. The further distances were already significantly larger. Abele went into the last competition with by far the best prospects. But the battle for silver and bronze was still completely open.

The best 1500-meter runner was Gado, who had no chance in the overall standings, with 4: 21.46 minutes. Kaul scored 4: 23.67 minutes as the second best decathlete. Arthur Abele ran the eighth fastest time with 4: 30.84 minutes and thus secured the European title. Ilya Schkurenjow won the competition for silver with 4: 31.38 minutes. Vital Schuk was marginally faster and thus secured the bronze medal, but the Belarusian remained behind Schkurenjow in the overall standings. Tim Duckworth, on the other hand, who in the course of the decathlon had always taken one of the first three places except in the shot put, was clearly too slow with 4: 58.28 minutes, so that he finally came in fifth. Niklas Kaul took fourth place in the end. Martin Roe followed in sixth ahead of Pieter Braun and Jan Doležal.
