final
August 11, 2018, 8:12 p.m. CEST
At world level, European women have not played a major role on this route in recent years, apart from the Briton Christine Ohuruogu - no longer at the start here. The race here in Berlin was very open even after the results of the semi-finals. The Italian European champion of 2014 and 2016 Libania Grenot had not reached the final.
The Greek Maria Belimbasaki was the first runner to hit the home straight, a few meters ahead. Second was Laviai Nielsen from Britain, just ahead of Madiea Ghafoor from the Netherlands. In the meantime, Agnė Šerkšnienė from Lithuania and Justyna Święty-Ersetic from Poland followed closely behind. The further gaps were also very close. Lisanne de Witte from the Netherlands was sixth.
In the last hundred meters Nielsen lost his strength. Belimbasaki held up better in the front, but now Święty-Ersetic stormed up from behind and de Witte also showed great stamina. Justyna Święty-Ersetic caught the Greek with the last steps and became European champion in 50.41 seconds. Maria Belimbasaki won the silver medal four hundredths of a second behind. Lisanne de Witte set a new Dutch national record with 50.77 s and won the bronze medal. For Laviai Nielsen it was enough for fourth place. Iga Baumgart-Witan, the second Polish woman in this final, was fifth ahead of Agnė Šerkšnienė and Floria Gueï from France. Madiea Ghafoor took eighth place.
