final
August 12, 2018, 9:20 p.m. CEST
In the final there was only one line-up change compared to the preliminary stages:
- UK - Dina Asher-Smith ran in place of Daryll Neita.
The season from Great Britain was clearly favored. The British had the best team from Europe at the last World Championships (second place) and the 2016 Olympic Games (third place). They also had the fastest lead time without their best sprinter, Dina Asher-Smith. The main competitors for Great Britain came from the Netherlands and Germany. The Dutch team competed as European champions in 2016 , while the Germans came off as the second best European relay behind the British at the last World Championships and Olympic Games. Also to be considered were the Swiss women with the strong Mujinga Kambundji.
After a strong performance by the German 100-meter vice European champion Gina Lückenkemper on the back straight, the German relay was just ahead at half of the course. At the last change, however, this lead was used up. A very close race of the final runners began on the home straight. The Swiss women led very thinly through Kambundji after a strong cornering. The Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain followed almost equally. The British double European champion on both sprint routes Dina Asher-Smith achieved a secure gold medal for her team. The other placements were fiercely contested right up to the end. Finally, Naomi Sedney prevailed and won silver for the Netherlands with eight hundredths of a second ahead. Rebekka Haase saved bronze for Germany with a good performance and was seven hundredths ahead of Swiss Salomé Kora at the finish. The distances to the other seasons were greater. France followed in fifth ahead of Poland and Italy. Spain took eighth place.
Dina Asher-Smith won the third gold medal at these European championships.
