Ajla Del Ponte (born July 15, 1996 ) is a Swiss athlete who specializes in short sprints and also competes in the relay .

career path

Del Ponte has been a student at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Lausanne since 2016 .

Athletic career

Ajla Del Ponte initially did heptathlon , but was more successful in the sprint and won several championship and runner-up titles in the youth classes. She gained her first international experience in 2014 at the Junior World Championships in Eugene , where she was eliminated in the first round of the 100-meter run with 11.99 seconds and the Swiss 4-by-100-meter relay in 45.02 seconds took fifth place. The following year she took part in the 200-meter run at the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna , but was eliminated there with 24.64 s in the lead. In 2016, Del Ponte ran a new Swiss record in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the European Championships in Amsterdam in 42.87 seconds and later finished fourth in the final in 43.00 s. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she came with the relay in the 2nd preliminary series with 43.12 seconds in 6th place and missed the final by 42 hundredths.

In 2017 she made it to the semifinals of the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in the 60-meter run , in which she was eliminated with 7.39 seconds. At the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz she finished fifth over 100 meters in 11.66 s and won the bronze medal behind Spain and France in 44.07 s with the Swiss relay. With the relay she then took part in the World Championships in London , where she finished fifth in the final in 42.51 s. Just two weeks later she won the gold medal at the Student World Games in Taipei in the 4 x 100 meter relay with Cornelia Halbheer , Salomé Kora and Selina von Jackowski in 43.81 seconds and over 100 meters in 11.62 seconds eighth place. The following year she reached the semi-finals at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham over 60 meters, in which she was eliminated with 7.40 s. Also at the European Championships in Berlin she reached the semi-finals over 100 meters and was eliminated there with 11.38 seconds. In addition, she was fourth with the season in 42.30 s. In 2019 she was eighth over 60 meters in 7.30 s at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow . In July she again took part in the Summer Universiade in Naples and won the silver medal there in 11.33 s behind the Indian Dutee Chand . In addition, she defended her title with the Swiss relay in 43.72 seconds.
