Race course

The best European in the strong field of African women at the last World Championships was the Dutchwoman Susan Krumins, who finished fifth. The Turkish girl Yasemin Can from Turkey came seventh as the best European at the 2016 Olympic Games . These two runners were among the favorites here. Can was also double European champion in 2016 over both long-distance railways. Another medal candidate was the Swedish European champion of 2016 over 5000 meters Meraf Bahta.

The first kilometer with Romanian Ancuța Bobocel in the lead was not particularly fast at just under 3:15 minutes. Here the field was still completely together. But soon the Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter took the lead and with a slight increase in speed the field fell apart into smaller groups. Salpeter was able to leave with Can and Bobocel. However, a six-man chasing group was only seconds behind. From this group, Krumins and Bahta caught up with the top three women. They were followed by the Portuguese Sara Moreira, the German Alina Reh and the Dutch Jip Vastenburg, each separated by a few meters. The group of five at the front stayed together while Reh caught up with Moreira. A few seconds back followed a group of three with Vastenburg, the Polish Katarzyna Rutkowska and the British Alice Wright. Halfway through the course, Bobocel, who later gave up completely, lost touch with the leaders.

The gap between the now four top runners on Reh and Moreira or Wright and Rutkowska widened more and more. Vastenburg had meanwhile fallen back. As the next runner, Bahta lost contact with the very front. Salpeter, Can and Krumins now formed a group of three. Moreira and Reh continued to run together in positions five and six - Bahta was fourth, Bobocel was still in the race. Wright followed in seventh. Shortly before the 7000 meter mark, Salpeter had easily set itself apart from its competitors. Krumins was only a few meters behind, while Can now got into trouble and had to let it tear down completely. Bahta was still fourth. Reh now followed Wright alone in fifth place, Moreira had fallen behind.

The race was now entering the decisive phase. The distance between saltpeter and krumins remained fairly constant for a long time. Can lost more and more ground. She had to let Bahta pass first and then also deer. In the end, Lonah Chemtai Salpeter increased her lead to almost ten seconds and became European champion ahead of Susan Krumins. Meraf Bahta won the bronze medal ahead of Alina Reh and Yasemin Can. Alice Wright was sixth ahead of the Swedes Charlotta Fougberg and the Belarusian Swjatlana Kudselitsch.
