The German Tobias Potye failed because of his two failed attempts at 2.21 m in the qualification
For the Italian Marco Fassinotti, the miss jump over 2.21 m was decisive for his retirement

The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification height was 2.27 m. Since no jumper even attempted this height when it was clear that 2.25 m would be sufficient, the twelve best athletes from both groups together qualified for the final (highlighted in light green). Finally, twelve athletes who had jumped 2.21 m without any previous unsuccessful attempt reached the final fight.

final

August 11, 2018, 8:00 p.m. CEST

European record holder Bohdan Bondarenko, the best European in recent years, was not among the participants. The favorites were primarily the Belarusian Maksim Nedassekau, who had impressed with strong performances this season, the reigning European champion Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy, the Ukrainian vice European champion from 2014 Andrij Prozenko, the neutral flag Ilya Ivanyuk - sixth of the World Cup 2017 - and the German World Cup fifth of 2017 Mateusz Przybylko.

At the jump height of 2.28 m, seven athletes were still in the competition. With the Turk Alperen Acet, Prozenko and the Pole Sylwester Bednarek, three of them failed here, so that four high jumpers were still fighting for the medals when 2.31 m was hung up. Without any failure, Przybylko and Ivanjuk led the field. Tamberi had a miss jump at 2.24 m. Nedassekau had torn 2.28 m twice and saved his last attempt for 2.31 m. He succeeded, so that he was still one of the medal candidates. Przybylko and Iwanjuk were successful with their first jumps, while Tamberi decided after a failed attempt to continue with his two remaining attempts at 2.33 m, which were now placed. The Italian didn't succeed. It tore twice and so Gianmarco Tamberi finished fourth. For Ilya Ivanyuk, 2.33 m was too high that day. He failed three times and had won the bronze medal.

For Przybylko and Nedassekau, however, things continued. Both jumped 2.33 m with their first attempts. For them it was now about gold and silver. Again, the jump height has been increased by two centimeters to 2.35 m. Here, too, Przybylko's white vest remained, he took the height with his first jump. Nedassekau, on the other hand, had two unsuccessful attempts and saved his remaining jump for the next height as he did at 2.28 m. This time, however, the Belarusian was not successful. Maksim Nedassekau failed at 2.37 m and was thus the winner of the silver medal. Przybylko had skipped the height and now let hang up 2.38 m. He tore three times, but Mateusz Przybylko was the new European champion with his 2.35 m skipped.
