The men's high jump at the 1986 European Athletics Championships was held on August 30 and 31, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .
In this competition there was a double victory for the Soviet high jumpers. World record holder Igor Paklin became European champion . He won ahead of Sergei Malchenko . Carlo Thränhardt from the Federal Republic of Germany won the bronze medal.

Record improvement
In the final on August 31, European champion Igor Paklin improved the existing championship record by four centimeters to 2.34 m.
qualification
August 30, 1986, 10:00 a.m.
Seventeen participants went to the qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 2.26 m. Nine athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the five tied next-placed athletes who had crossed 2.23 m (highlighted in light green). A total of fourteen high jumpers went into the final on the following day. Only three athletes were eliminated.
