The men's pole vault at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held on August 27 and 29, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition there was an extraordinary specialty with a double victory by a brother couple. The two athletes competed for the Soviet Union. The reigning world champion and world record holder Serhij Bubka became European champion . Wassyl Bubka came in second . Bronze went to the French Philippe Collet .

Record improvement

European champion Serhij Bubka improved the existing EM record in the final on August 26th by fifteen centimeters to 5.85 m. Soviet UnionSoviet Union 

qualification

Twenty participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 5.50 m. Ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the three tied next-placed athletes who had crossed 5.40 m (highlighted in light green). Two days later, a total of thirteen pole vaulters went into the final.
