Preliminary round

August 28, 1986, 10:30 a.m.

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semifinals.

Remarks:

  • The distribution of the 24 sprinters on the prelims was very uneven. The first two races were filled with eight and five athletes respectively, the third and fourth races with six athletes each. Such a division naturally has an impact on equal opportunities with regard to qualifying for the next round. This can perhaps be explained by the short-term withdrawal of reports.
  • In preliminary three and four there are different information in the sources used here:
    • The two websites mentioned below on european-athletics.org also name the Portuguese Arnaldo Abrantes in the third run as a runner also placed fifth. His time is listed as 21.50 s. However, this representation is completely inconsistent, because the race would have been occupied by two Portuguese runners, which would not be common. In the preliminary runs, the athletes are divided in such a way that, if possible, not two runners from one country start in a race. In addition, the time specification does not correspond in any way with the times of the other sprinters in this run. The second forerun, on the other hand, is conducted with only four runners at the springs.
    • On the website at todor66.com - also one of the sources mentioned below - Abrantes is listed as fifth in the second preliminary run and is missing in preliminary three.
    • In the following overviews, the consistent presentation is taken from the website at todor66.com.
