The men's 5000 meter run at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held on August 28 and 31, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

There were two medals for the British runners in this competition: gold and bronze. Jack Buckner became European champion . Second place went to Italian Stefano Mei , five days earlier European champion over 10,000 meters . Bronze went to Tim Hutchings .
