António Leitão ( António Carlos Carvalho Nogueira Leitão; ) (born July 22, 1960 in Espinho ; † March 18, 2012 in Porto ) was a Portuguese long-distance runner .

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Leitão accelerated the pace in the final of the 5000-meter run and was in the lead for most of the race, knowing that with his limited sprinting ability he would have no chance against the competition. In the end he achieved 13: 09.20 minutes and was rewarded with the bronze medal for his courage, because only the Moroccan Saïd Aouita and the Swiss Markus Ryffel were able to overtake him in a sprint.

Two years later at the European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1986 , the British pushed the pace to keep the strong Italians in check. Leitão was able to keep up with the high pace, but in the sprint he had no chance again and finished fifth in 13: 17.67 minutes. The British Jack Buckner won ahead of the Italian Stefano Mei .

In 1986 Leitão won the San Silvestre Vallecana .
