David Moorcroft (2008)

David Moorcroft ( David Robert "Dave" Moorcroft ; born April 10, 1953 in Coventry ) is a former British medium and long-distance runner who was among the world's best in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, he was seventh over 1500 m . In 1978 he won bronze over the same distance at the European Athletics Championships in Prague and then won for England at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton .

At the Olympic Games in 1980 he started over 5000 m , but was eliminated in the semifinals with stomach problems. In 1982 he won the same distance at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and at the Bislett Games improved the one year old world record of Kenyan Henry Rono by almost six seconds to 13: 00.41 min. He held this record for three years. As a favorite he traveled to the European Athletics Championships in Athens , but had to admit defeat there to the two Germans Thomas Wessinghage and Werner Schildhauer .

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he finished 14th over 5000 m.

During his playing days, David Moorcroft was a student of sports science at Loughborough University . He is currently the managing director of the UK Athletics Association (UKA). In 1998 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to athletics .
