The men's hammer throw at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held on August 29 and 30, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition there was a triple success for the Soviet hammer throwers. The defending champion and vice world champion from 1983 Jurij Sjedych became European champion . With his victory he improved his own world record to 86.74 m. Second place went to the reigning world champion and European Championship third from 1982 Sergei Litvinow . Bronze went to Igor Nikulin, second in the European Championship in 1982 .

With his victory distance in the final, he also set a new world record.

21 participants took part in the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 76.00 m. Ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the two next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 75.46 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
