The men's hammer throw at the 1990 European Athletics Championships was held on August 30 and 31, 1990 in the Poljud Stadium in Split .
In this competition there were two medals for hammer throwers of the USSR, gold and bronze. European champion was Ihar Astapkowitsch . He won ahead of the Hungarian Tibor Gécsek . Bronze went to the European Championships -second of 1982 and EM -third of 1986 Igor Nikulin .

qualification
August 30, 1990
Twenty participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 77.00 m. Three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the nine next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 73.12 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
