The men's hammer throw at the 2002 European Athletics Championships was held on August 6th and 7th, 2002 in Munich's Olympic Stadium.

European champion was the Hungarian Adrián Annus . He won before the Ukrainian World Cup third in 1999 Wladyslaw Piskunow . Bronze went to the Greek Alexandros Papadimitriou .

31 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 79.00 m. Six athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the six next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 77.78 m had to be achieved for the final.
