The hammer throw men in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 1 and 2 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

European champion was the Soviet Olympic champion from 1976 Jurij Sedych . He won ahead of Roland Steuk from the GDR. Bronze went to the German world record holder Karl-Hans Riehm .

Record improvement

European champion Jurij Sedych improved the existing championship record in the final on September 2nd by 2.60 m to 77.28 m. Soviet Union 1955Soviet Union 

qualification

Twenty participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 70.00 m. Since only eleven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athlete to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 69.84 m was enough for the final.
