The 10,000-meter race of the men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on August 29, 1978 at Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

The Finn Martti Vainio won . Second place went to Italian Venanzio Ortis , four days later European champion over 5000 meters . Bronze went to Aleksandras Antipovas from the USSR.
