The 3000 Meters of women in the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on August 29, 1978 at Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

The European champion was the Soviet runner Svetlana Ulmassowa . She won ahead of the Romanian Natalia Mărășescu , former Natalia Andrei, who five days later also took second place over 1500 meters . Bronze went to the Norwegian Grete Waitz , who, as Grete Andersen, had finished third in the European Championship over 1500 meters in 1974 .

Like later over 1500 meters , Natalia Mărăşescu won silver - the following year, like Maricica Puică, she was banned for doping abuse.
Grete Waitz, under their name Grete Andresen EM -Third of 1974 , won bronze here over 1500 meters she won five days later fifth - in the course of her career she was a world-class marathon runner
