The long jump men at the 1978 European Athletics Championships was on 1 and 2 September 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

The Frenchman Jacques Rousseau won . He won before Yugoslavia Nenad Stekić , who became vice European champion in 1974 . Third place went to Vladimir Zepelev from the USSR.

Record improvement

European champion Jacques Rousseau improved the existing EM record in the final on September 2nd by thirteen centimeters to 8.18 m.  

qualification

September 1, 1978

21 participants took part in the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 7.70 m. Since only ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 7.66 m was enough for the final.
