Record improvement
European champion Igor Ter-Owanessjan broke his own EM record five times - first in the qualification with 7.82 m and then in the final with 8.05 m / 8.19 m / 7.85 m / 7.87 m four more times . The sources show that there was wind support of 3.2 m / s during his furthest jump, so that this performance could not be included in the best and record lists. The sources do not tell whether there were regular conditions for his other jumps, with which he exceeded the existing championship record, or whether the tailwind there was also more than 2 m / s.
The widths of 7.85 m each, achieved in the final by medal winners Rainer Stenius and Pentti Eskola , were also better than the existing European Championship record. No wind values are available for these jumps either, but it is stated for both results that they were seasonal bests.
So it is only clear that the championship record of 1958 has been improved. However, who is the new record holder and what the exact width of the new record is cannot be determined with certainty at this point.
qualification
September 13, 1962, 9:00 a.m.
The twenty participants competed in a joint qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 7.50 m. Since only six athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 7.37 m was enough for the final.
