The men's javelin throw at the 1962 European Athletics Championships was held on September 14 and 15, 1962 in Belgrade's Partizan Stadium .

In this competition there was a double victory for the Soviet throwers. Jānis Lūsis was European champion . Second place went to the 1960 Olympic champion Viktor Zybulenko . Bronze went to Władysław Nikiciuk from Poland.

qualification

The 25 participants took part in a joint qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 75.00 m. Since only five throwers exceeded this distance (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes to twelve participants (highlighted in light green). So finally 72.80 m was enough for the final.

Pauli Nevala - two years later Olympic champion - retired with 72.15 m in the qualification
68.71 m were not enough for Urs von Wartburg to take part in the final
