The javelin men in the 1978 European Athletics Championships on 29 and 30 August 1978 at the Stadium Evžena Rošického of Prague held.

The German thrower Michael Wessing became European champion . He won ahead of Nikolai Grebnew from the USSR. Bronze went to the vice European champion from 1974 and EM third from 1971 Wolfgang Hanisch , GDR.

doping

There was a doping case in this competition. The Soviet pitcher Wassili Jerschow , who originally came in fifth, was subsequently disqualified for violating the doping regulations and suspended for eighteen months. The athletes who were initially placed behind him in the final moved up one rank each.

qualification

23 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 80.00 m. Thirteen athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue) and competed in the final on the following day. Another thrower who had achieved a distance of more than eighty meters also took part in the final, but was subsequently disqualified for doping abuse.
