qualification

29 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 83.00 m. Only one athlete exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the eleven next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 78.89 m was enough for the final.

Thomas Röhler , placed thirteenth overall in the qualification, scored 78.89 m like the opponent in front of him, but had a 71 centimeter worse second best attempt than his competitor Gabriel Wallin in twelfth place. With that Röhler did not reach the final.

The throwers in Group B, who only started their competition after qualifying in Group A had already been completed, were able to see the distance they had to achieve in order to be among the top twelve and thus in the final. Against this background, some participants gave up their last attempts after they had achieved a sufficient distance.
