Petr Frydrych (born January 13, 1988 in Klatovy , ČSSR ) is a Czech athlete who specializes in javelin throwing.

Career

Petr Frydrych gained his first international experience in 2005 when he took eleventh place at the Youth World Championships in Marrakech with the 700 g javelin with a width of 68.66 m. The following year he took part in the Junior World Championships in Beijing , but was eliminated there with 67.84 m in qualification. In 2007 he reached ninth place at the Junior European Championships in Hengelo with 68.65 m and in 2009 he won the silver medal behind the Finn Ari Mannio at the U23 European Championships in Kaunas with a throw of 80.53 m . In addition, he qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Berlin , where he finished tenth with 79.29 m in the final, as well as at the European Championships the following year in Barcelona with 77.30 m. In 2011 he again took part in the World Championships in Daegu , South Korea , where he was eliminated from the qualification with a width of 76.18 m. In the following year he qualified for the Summer Olympics in London , but did not reach the final there with 75.46 m . Before that he was eliminated from the qualification at the European Championships in Helsinki with 68.88 m.

In 2013 he took part in the Summer Universiade in Kazan , where he finished seventh with a throw at 75.69 m, but this year he missed qualifying for the World Championships in Moscow. The following year he started at the European Championships in Zurich , where he did not reach the final with 75.19 m. Also at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, he was eliminated as 30th of the qualification with 74.24 m . In 2016, Frydrych qualified again for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and made it to the finals there , in which he finished twelfth and last with 79.12 m.

At the 2017 World Championships in London , Frydrych won the bronze medal in the javelin final behind Johannes Vetter and his compatriot Jakub Vadlejch . In fourth place before the last attempt, he was able to achieve a new personal best of 88.32 m in the last attempt and with this distance displaced the 2012 Olympic champion, Thomas Röhler , by only six centimeters from the bronze rank. The following year he reached the final at the European Championships in Berlin, but was twelfth there with 72.79 m.

In 2009 and 2013, as well as 2018 and 2020 , Frydrych became the Czech javelin throwing champion.
