The color of the horizon (original title Adrift ) is a film drama by Baltasar Kormákur , which opened in US cinemas on June 1, 2018 and was released in German cinemas on July 12, 2018. The film is based on the true story of a young woman and her fiancé who were caught in a storm while sailing in the Pacific Ocean on their way from Tahiti to California.

Tami Oldham sets sail from Tahiti for California with her fiancé Richard Sharp. But the sailing trip turns out to be a horror trip when the boat gets into a strong storm. Richard is swept overboard, Tami wakes up hours later alone on the open sea. The original port of destination San Diego has become inaccessible with the damaged boat, so she decides to call at Hawaii , 1500 nautical miles away, instead . Supported by her seriously injured fiancé, who later turns out to be a hallucination, she navigates the ship to Hilo in Hawaii using sextants and nautical charts .

The film is loosely based on the autobiographical report Red Sky In Mourning: A True Story Of Love, Loss And Survival At Sea by Tami Oldham Ashcraft , which she wrote together with professional writer Susea McGearhart and self-published in 2002. The director was the proven extreme filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur , who had previously appeared in films such as Everest and the thriller series Trapped - Gefangen in Iceland .
Most of the shooting took place in Fiji's capital Suva , in July 2017 at the Royal Suva Yacht Club there in Walu Bay, and later in Rakiraki and at Pacific Harbor. The Fiji Islands had served Tahiti as a backdrop. The crew filmed up to 14 hours a day after a two-hour drive on the high seas.
The film music is composed by Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka. Sony Classical released the soundtrack for the film on June 1, 2018.
The film was also released in US cinemas on June 1, 2018 and in German cinemas on July 12, 2018. The film premiered on May 23, 2018 in Los Angeles.

Reviews and grossing results
Knut Elstermann from MDR Kultur thinks it has almost become its own film genre: “People in distress , completely on their own in the fight against the elemental forces, but unfortunately this film does not reach the intensity of All Is Lost with Robert Redford or Styx with Susanne Wolff . “The main actors Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin would do their best in the role of the couple, and the restless, terrifyingly beautiful sea was also well worth seeing, but the direction of the Icelandic artist Baltasar Kormákur is so tearful and sentimental the figure drawing so imprecise and superficial that this drama unfortunately drowns on the high seas before it can really take off, Elstermann continues.
Tim Lindemann from epd Film thinks that the film shouldn't be accused of its over-dramatic portrayal of love under extreme conditions, since that is inseparable from the genre of melodrama , but the film's undoing is that it has no interest in its characters. For the beginnings of the love affairs in Tahiti, the director only finds absurd images and dialogues, and at no point does real chemistry arise between Woodley and Claflin, continues Lindemann. The creators of this new shipwreck spectacle would have renewed the concept above all with an idea by not exposing an old, weather-beaten man to the tides, but two attractive young actors.
The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings was approximately $ 60 million. The film recorded 321,768 visitors in Germany.
