Contraband (German TV title Contraband - Dangerous Freight ) is an American thriller directed by Baltasar Kormákur . The film is a remake of the Icelandic film Reykjavík - Rotterdam .

action

Chris Farraday is a shrewd ex- smuggler in New Orleans who now installs alarm systems and has two young sons with his wife Kate. Kate's brother Andy ends up injured in hospital; they learn that Andy had smuggled drugs on a cargo ship and had to throw the goods overboard during a raid by US customs. Andy's client Tim Briggs then demands compensation from him. He also threatens Chris and his family.

To save his brother-in-law from this situation, Chris once again leaves his peaceful family life and takes on a smuggling tour in which a large amount of counterfeit money is to be smuggled into the USA . He asks his best friend, the building contractor Sebastian Abney, to take care of his family.

With dramatic complications, Chris succeeds in smuggling the goods from Panama to the USA past the customs controls . He foisted drugs on his enemies, the gang around Briggs and the hated captain, and got them arrested by the police.

Sebastian, who was in cahoots with the gangsters from the beginning, has meanwhile harassed Kate while drunk and supposedly killed her in a scramble. While Sebastian tries to set her body in concrete on his construction site, Chris arrives and is able to save his wife at the last second. Sebastian is sentenced to prison and treated as an outcast in prison. Chris can monetize the smuggled counterfeit money and a stolen painting by Jackson Pollock and earns several million. The final scene shows him with his recovered wife in a luxurious house on the beach.

Reviews

" Contraband is a contraband in itself - although absolutely predictable, the thriller remake is exciting until the last minute thanks to its strong actors and its quick narration."

- Christoph Petersen : Filmstarts.de

"Despite some original twists and turns, tension from the steadily increasing time pressure for Chris and a lot of speed, 'Contraband' does not go beyond the conventional 'hero saves everyone and lives happily ever after' principle."

- Rebecca Struck : Star

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Trivia

The film had a budget of 25 million US dollars and played about 96 million again. The ship is the BBC Romania , owned by the German shipping company Briese from Leer.
