action

Insurance company Quality Life hires insurance detective Abe Holt to investigate a car accident after which an unidentifiable corpse is found. The tired village police found on the basis of a half-burned driver's license and the license plate that it was a wanted criminal who had a life insurance of one million euros. Holt is hired to dig in the dirt until he finds a reason that his company can keep the money. When the village police officer mentions that the same car is being driven in the province where the car accident took place, Holt begins his search for clues here.

It turns out that the $ 1 million insured will go to the victim's sister, Isold, whose husband just owns the said car. Isold, her husband Fred and their son Thor live in poor circumstances and could use the money. As vigorously as Holt searches for mistakes in the case, he feels sorry for the young mother Isold and her son. When he begins to believe that it was murder, the case becomes personally important to him and he makes it his goal to help the woman and her son.

It turns out that Fred is actually Isold's brother, the wanted criminal. He blackmailed his sister by threatening her with (renewed) violence and with taking away her son.

Holt, who doesn't quite follow the rules, changes the insured person to the false identity of Fred and wants to kill him. This drives him on a country road and causes an accident in which both are killed. Isold is thus freed from her brother's tyranny and receives the one million US dollars.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on January 26, 2006 that the film had " Fargo in mind". Few writers would get the right mix of dark humor and malicious characters; in that case the plot and humor would be neglected. The portrayal of Julia Stiles was "halfway acceptable", the other portrayals were "routine", while that of Forest Whitaker was "a mystery". The film has more chances on television and video than in cinemas.

Awards

Baltasar Kormákur won the FIPRESCI Prize of the Göteborg Film Festival in 2006 and the Critics' Prize of the Cognac Festival du Film Policier . The cameraman Óttar Guðnason and the music group Mugison each received the Icelandic Edda Award in 2006 , the production designer Karl Júlíusson was nominated for the same award.

backgrounds

The film was shot in Iceland and Minnesota . Its production amounted to an estimated 12 million US dollars .
