action

The DEA agent Robert "Bobby" Trench and the US Naval Intelligence officer Michael "Stig" Stigman are independently assigned to a drug cartel to arrest the drug lord Papi Greco. For this reason, the two initially distrust each other. When the attempt to prove Papi is drug trafficking fails, the two want to rob a bank in which Papi's supposed money is stored in order to at least prove tax evasion . Bobby's colleague and affair Deb is also privy to it. In addition to the one with Bobby, Deb has another affair with a man Bobby knows about but doesn't know personally and whom he simply calls "Harvey".

When Bobby and Stig finally find a little more than $ 43 million instead of the expected $ 3 million in the bank , they drive into the desert to talk. Bobby is surprised to find that they are not expected by the police in front of the bank, as agreed with Deb. Stig shoots Bobby in the shoulder, whereupon he discovers that Bobby is an undercover agent. Confused, he then disappears without revealing his own identity, and leaves Bobby in the desert to deliver the money to his senior officer, Quince. When Quince learns that Stig only shot Bobby and did not kill him, as ordered by him, he gives the order to kill Stig, which fails, however. Meanwhile, a man named Earl appears, who also works for the government and forcibly questions the director of the bank about the robbery.

After escaping the desert and seeing a vet to have the bullet removed from his shoulder, Bobby first meets with Deb and asks her to learn more about Stig's past. He then visits Jessup's house to report to his boss. Earl is already waiting in Jessup's house, who kills Jessup with Bobby's gun and blackmailed him: Bobby should get Earl the 43 million dollars as quickly as possible, otherwise he will be accused of the murder of Jessup. Bobby then drives to Stig's apartment to find out where he has deposited the money. Stig observes him from the roof of the neighboring house with a sniper rifle . When Quince's men show up at Stig's apartment to kill Stig, Bobby is in danger, but Stig helps him out.

Shortly afterwards, Stig and Bobby kidnap dad, clarify their true identities after a brief scuffle and work together from then on. They take Papi to Deb's garage, where they learn that Earl is a corrupt CIA agent and that they have stolen money from the CIA that drug cartel agents received as bribes . When Quince's men show up at Deb's house, Daddy escapes, and Bobby realizes that Deb must be involved because there is no other way Quince could have found out about their whereabouts.

On the run from Quince's men, Daddy's followers can seize Stig, Bobby and Deb and take them to Daddy's ranch, where he first tortures Bobby and Stig. Earl, who knows nothing about this, threatens Papi and demands of him to find the two fugitives, whereupon Papi decides that he wants the 43 million for himself. If Bobby and Stig don't deliver him the money, he threatens to kill Deb. That's why the two Stigs go to the military base, where Stig asks the admiral for help, which is unsuccessful because he believes him but does not want to damage the reputation of the Navy, while Bobby visits Quince, since he has realized that this is Deb's second ominous affair "Harvey" must be. Quince tells Bobby that he and Deb wanted to use him and Stig to steal the money and then take it back. When Bobby leaves to look for the money, Deb is shot by Dad, which Bobby overhears on the cell phone.

When he arrives at Deb's apartment and sees her body, he realizes that the money must be in the motel room where he occasionally met with Deb. Now Stig and Bobby gather their tormentors Papi, Quince and Earl in Mexico at Papi's ranch , where Bobby first supposedly blows up all the money and then a shootout breaks out in which both Papi and Quince and Earl are killed. Bobby and Stig leave the ranch and the viewer learns that part of the money was probably not the victim of the explosion, but that Bobby kept it.

Reviews

2 Guns received mostly positive reviews from professional critics.

“'I am the government!' These words from the mouth of the nefarious CIA mastermind in '2 Guns' initially seem like a threat, because in view of current real events, it is by no means such a strange idea that real power in the USA has long been with the secret services and their allies. But the Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur ('Contraband') only superficially plays with such ideas and references to reality in his buddy action thriller; rather, '2 Guns' is deeply cynical, but also perversely entertaining, proof that Hollywood's own laws apply . And so Bill Paxton ('Titanic', 'Aliens') plays the aforementioned government representative with the psychotic explosiveness and impatient arrogance of the insatiable, greedy sadist actor: The result is a pleasurable portrait for the gallery of memorable film villains - guaranteed without realism. The two stars of the film, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, also free themselves from any burdensome authenticity and so '2 Guns' becomes an ambivalent but fun cinematic humbug full of brisk sayings and action. "

“As a slightly over-the-top action show, although it is better not to ponder the realism of some scenes for a long time, 2 Guns is definitely one of the better works as an entertainment cinema of stature. The fact that in the whole spectacle the time was also found to embed critical tones against the behavior of US authorities, the military and state services is extremely gratifying, since it is not exactly the usual practice when it comes to Hollywood cinema. More of this kind of entertainment is welcome. "

- moviemaze.de

“A lightweight buddy movie in the American-Mexican border region, the tone and rhythm of which seem like an ironic re-edition of genre patterns from the 1970s. Some of the phrases can be interpreted as subversive criticism of the 'War on Drugs', but the staging can also simply be appreciated as relaxed fun, the action of which - despite all the shooting - is staged in a relatively subtle way. "
