action

Kristófer was an alcohol smuggler on an Icelandic ship, was convicted and now works as a security guard in Reykjavík to keep his wife Irís and their two young sons afloat. After his brother-in-law Arnór botched a smuggling contract, Kristófer decides to take one last tour to Rotterdam to pay off his debt to the criminal clients. Kristófer's friend Steingrímur helps him get a job on his former freighter. Both still know each other from the days of smuggling, Steingrímur is now a successful building contractor. On the ship, Kristófer meets old friends whom he initiates and who help with smuggling. The captain Runólfur, however, is suspicious and keeps him under special observation.

In Rotterdam, the crew members can successfully delay the departure of the ship so that there is enough time to get the alcohol. At the handover with the Dutch contact person Hoogland, however, they are surprisingly without money because Arnór wants to buy drugs behind the back of the others. In this situation Kristófer and his colleague are forced by Hoogland to take part in a robbery on an art transport in return. The attack fails, but the two of them escape with both the alcohol and the painting and reach the ship in the harbor in time.

Meanwhile, the gangsters intimidate Kristófer's family in Reykjavík and they temporarily move to Steingrímur. It turns out that he - he used to be together with Irís - now wants to win back Irís and only set up the smuggling tour to bring Kristófer back to prison. In an argument, Steingrímur injures Irís and thinks she is dead. He wants to set her supposed corpse in concrete on one of his construction sites and make it disappear.

Kristófer and the crew sink the alcohol in watertight containers off the Icelandic coast so that customs cannot find anything. Kristófer smuggles Arnór's drugs off board in the captain's belongings and meets the gangsters to hand over the drugs in his house, to which he has secretly made a duplicate key. As a security guard, he knows the burglar alarm system and thus informs the police without being noticed, who arrest the gangsters. He himself leaves the house beforehand and has since found out that Steingrímur is behind everything. He confronts him on his construction site and asks about Irís. With a call on her cell phone he can find her and at the last moment save her from the cement mixer. She is still alive and is taken to the hospital.

A little later Kristófer's smuggler colleagues go out to sea on a raft and collect the alcohol canisters there. Kristófer and Irís move into a new apartment and paint it. The canvas of the painting stolen in Rotterdam serves as a cover for the floor. What they don't know - it is apparently a valuable picture of Jackson Pollock .

Reviews

In the Internet Movie Database , Reykjavík - Rotterdam has an average user rating of 6.8 out of 10.

“As it progresses [...] the film shifts its focus to the smuggling story, making it both more exciting and darker - and at least comes up with a slightly surprising twist. Main actor Baltasar Kormákur is particularly convincing as a lovable smuggler who actually only wants to take care of his family. "

- Sonja Hartl : Zeilenkino.de

Reykjavik - Rotterdam. Deadly Delivery is not a masterpiece, but a crude, gloomy and not all details coherent Icelandic thriller. "

- Dieter Wunderlich : Dieter Wunderlich film tips

“The entertaining trip from Reykjavík to Rotterdam and back is convincing not only because of its fast-paced and stylishly staged action, but also because of its dry humor, thanks to which the dark background story is given a light touch. The skilful amalgamation of irony and realism creates a touch of Tarantino. "
