Most of Arnaldur Indriðason's books star Erlendur Sveinsson and his colleagues from the police in Reykjavík . Usually, these are criminal cases that originate far in the past or where witnesses are not questioned for decades after a particular event. The private life of Commissioner Erlendur and the problematic relationship with his adult children play just as important a role as the crime plot and the connection with recent Icelandic history.

Arnaldur's breakthrough came with Nordermoor , the third novel in this crime series, for which he received the Scandinavian crime prize Glasnyckel for the first time . It is also the first novel by Arnaldur Indriðason to be published in Germany. It is about a rape that comes to light years later when the perpetrator is murdered under mysterious circumstances. Arnaldur deals with current issues in this book by attaching great importance to the registration of Icelandic citizens in a gene file and the registration of hereditary diseases . The success of this novel and its successor, Todeshauch , ensured that the other Erlendur cases in Germany were initially published as hardcover . In Outrageous and Abysses , the ninth and tenth novels in the series, Erlendur only appears indirectly in the thoughts and conversations of his colleagues, since he went to the East Fjords to work on coming to terms with a childhood trauma . The main characters here for the first time are the detective Elinborg and her family as well as her colleague Sigurður Óli.

Nordermoor was filmed in 2006 under the title Der Tote aus Nordermoor (Original: Mýrin ) with Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson as Erlendur Sveinsson, directed by Baltasar Kormákur . The film received the main prize at the 42nd Karlovy Vary Film Festival .

Only three of his previous works go different ways and are not to be described as detective novels, but rather as thrillers. In Gletschergrab a young Icelander tries to discover an intrigue that the American secret service is trying to cover up in Iceland. Traces of an airplane lead to Vatnajökull . Deadly Intrigue is the story of an exceptionally attractive woman who has mastered all the arts of seduction and will stop at nothing when it comes to getting her plans through. His thriller Codex Regius is about a young man who goes on an adventurous search for an important medieval Icelandic manuscript.

All of his works have also been published (in abbreviated form) as audio books, as have the bound and cardboard print editions from the Lübbe publishing group (Lübbe Audio). Speakers are Frank Glaubrecht , Ulrich Pleitgen , Heikko Deutschmann and Walter Kreye .
