Indriði G. Þorsteinsson

Indriði Guðmundur Þorsteinsson (born April 18, 1926 in Gilhagi , Skagafjörður ; † September 3, 2000 in Hveragerði ) was an Icelandic writer and journalist .

Life

Indriði's parents were the worker Þorsteinn Magnússon and his wife Anna Jósepsdóttir . After attending school in Laugarvatn , he worked as a salesman, truck and taxi driver. In the early 1950s he became a journalist in Reykjavík . In 1951 he began to publish literary texts.

His first novel, Sjötíu og níu af stöðinni , was published in 1955. It is considered a classic of Icelandic post-war literature . The book also received international attention. In 1962 it was filmed by the Danish director Erik Balling with Gunnar Eyjólfsson and Kristbjörg Kjeld in the leading roles. The film was very successful, but is also considered a scandal film because of its freedom of movement. The novel was translated into Hungarian and in 2011 also into German under the title Taxi 79 ab Station . German critics were mostly very positive. The novel was recognized in the Frankfurter Rundschau as "Icelandic literature in the best ironic leadership". In the world it was said that "a the force of the book hits like a mace blow" and the Süddeutsche Zeitung made Ernest Hemingway as a model Indriðis out, however, found that his "hero fails beautiful than its American counterparts." The WDR radiated a Radio play editing.

Indriði published several other novels, including Land og synir , which appeared in 1963 and was translated into German in 1966, as well as short stories and poems. From 1962 to 1973 and from 1987 to 1991 he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Tíminn .

He was with Þórunn Ó. Friðriksdóttir married and had four sons, including Arnaldur , who is also a well-known writer.
