Finnish crime prize

The Finnish Crime Award (Finnish: Vuoden johtolanka) is a media award for crime literature . The award was presented for the first time in 1985 by the one year Finnish thriller association recently founded Suomen dekkariseura (Engl .: The Finnish Whodunnit Society , Eng .: "Finnish company of the detective novel" ) awarded about a thousand-member non-profit organization based in Helsinki . It includes readers as well as authors, translators, journalists, book critics and publishers. The organization publishes publications on the genre of the crime novel and also publishes the quarterly crime magazine Ruumiin Kulttuuri (German: "Leichenkultur" ).
The aim of the newly introduced national crime fiction award was to promote and strengthen the crime novel genre in Finland. In contrast to well-known foreign prizes such as the French Grand prix de littérature policière or the British Dagger Award , the Finnish Crime Prize is not just a literary prize . Although the majority of the award winners were novelists, achievements from the fields of radio and television were also considered in the past .
The winners will be honored with a wooden sculpture, an engraved ceramic plaque and a diploma with a thumbprint created in the presence of a police officer. The about a foot high wooden sculpture, a challenge trophy , shows the relief of the Finnish novel Commissioner Palmu, who in the 1960s by actor Joel Rinne was presented (1897-1981) in four TV films. The figure, created by the well-known novelist Mika Waltari (1908–1979), also represents the Suomen dekkariseura logo .
Categories and award winners
The Finnish Crime Prize is awarded annually in three categories. Since 1985, the “National” ( Johtolanka-palkitut ) category has chosen the best local performance for the crime genre from the previous year. The winner is chosen by a team of three experts in two successive selection rounds. The most successful so far has been the novelist Matti Y. Joensuu , who won the award three times between 1985 and 2004 with his Kommissar Harjunpää series. On the other hand, there has been the “International” ( Ulkomaiset kunniakirjat ) category since 1993 , in which in the past such well-known authors as Thomas Harris , Patricia Highsmith , John le Carré or Henning Mankell were mostly honored for their book series or their complete works. In 2014, on the 30th anniversary of the Finnish crime fiction association, a prize was awarded for the best crime debut (esikoisdekkari-kunniakirja) for the first time. An honorary award ( Hornanlinna-kunniakirjat ) is awarded irregularly .
