Matti Yrjänä Joensuu (born October 31, 1948 , † December 4, 2011 ) was a Finnish writer and journalist .

Life

Joensuu received his training with the police . He later worked for the Helsinki Criminal Police Department (Violent Crime Department). After a journalistic phase he returned to the police service; he worked there until 2006.

He soon made a name for himself as a crime thriller, because his novels clearly bore his unmistakable signature. His investigator was Commissioner Timo Juhani Harjunpää.

In 1982 he received the Finnish State Prize for Literature. He has received the Finnish Crime Society Prize and the Swedish Crime Academy Prize several times.

His works have been translated into several languages. Several novels have also appeared in Germany. Joensuu died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2011. Joensuu never saw the translation of his last novel into German.
