Eugene Burdick

Eugene Leonard Burdick (born December 12, 1918 in Sheldon, Iowa ; died July 26, 1965 in Los Angeles ) was an American political scientist and author.

Burdick was co-author of The Ugly American (German: The Ugly American , 1958) and Fail Safe (German: Fire will fall from heaven , 1962). Both novels became bestsellers and models of successful films, The Ugly American with Marlon Brando in the leading role came to the cinema in 1963, Fail Safe as a target in Moscow in 1964, with Henry Fonda in the role of the US President (director: Sidney Lumet ).

Life

At the age of four, Burdick moved to Los Angeles with his parents . He attended Stanford University and the University of Oxford , received his PhD in psychology and worked in the political science department at the University of California . In 1956 his first novel The Ninth Wave was published. In the late 1950s he was one of the earliest members of the Society for General Systems Research. He died of a myocardial infarction in 1965 at the age of 46 .
