Reijo Juhani Mäki (born October 12, 1958 in Siikainen ) is a Finnish crime writer .

Life

During his studies, Mäki worked as a wood chopper, shipyard worker, doorman and as a ticket seller on the Stockholm subway. After graduating from Turku University of Economics, Reijo Mäki worked in the banking sector. He started to write during his first year of employment. His debut novel “Enkelipöly” was published in 1985. After ten years of work, Mäki decided to turn his back on the banking world. Mäki publishes a book about every year. In addition to novels, he also writes novellas and newspaper columns.

He is best known as the creator of the character of the Turku private detective Jussi Valtteri Vares . So far, 18 novels have been published in Finland about the die-hard bachelor investigator with the dirty image, most of which are set in the underworld and pubs of the city of Turku. The first German translation appeared in 1996 ("Die Strumpfbandnatter"). In 2004 the first film adaptation of a Vares novel was released in Finnish cinemas (“Vares - yksityisetsivä”). Since 2006, the film, which is based on the novel “The Yellow Widow”, has also been available on DVD in Germany.
