Life

In 1953 his father sold the farm in order to cultivate leased fields from then on. So the family moved to Kumla, where Håkan Nesser spent his childhood and youth. He attended elementary school and secondary school in Kumla, then the grammar school in Hallsberg , where he graduated from college in 1968. He then began to study literary history , Scandinavian studies , history , philosophy and English at Uppsala University . Soon he moved to the college for teachers to become a high school teacher for Swedish and English. From 1974 he worked in Märsta as a high school teacher. In 1998 Nesser gave up his job as a teacher and became a freelance writer. In August 2006, he and his second wife, Elke, a psychiatrist, settled in Greenwich Village, New York. A few years later, the couple relocated to London.

Literary work

He started writing novels in the 1980s. In 1988 Nesser made his debut with the novel Koreographers. In 1993, Det grovmaskiga nätet (German: Das grobmaschige Netz) appeared, the first volume in the Van Veeteren crime novel series. The book was awarded the Swedish Crime Prize as best debut of 1993 and was not only a bestseller in Sweden. By 2003 a total of ten volumes of the crime series about Commissioner Van Veeteren had been published .

As the setting for the novels in the Van Veeteren series, Nesser has constructed a European-looking fictional country with the capital Maardam. Place and person names as well as landscape descriptions cannot be clearly assigned. Northern Europe is mentioned several times in the novels. Some names and the currency guilder are reminiscent of the Netherlands, but there are also often German, Polish or Baltic-sounding names and places. Scandinavian locations were chosen for the films.

Along with Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, Håkan Nesser is one of Sweden's most important crime writers.

With Mensch ohne Hund , Nesser started a new crime series in 2006. The main character is criminal inspector Gunnar Barbarotti, who is investigating in Kymlinge, a fictional place in western Sweden. The fifth Barbarotti case with the title Styckerskan från Lilla Burma was published in Sweden in 2012 and under the title On the evening of murder in Germany.

All of Nesser's crime novels are less about action than about psychology and philosophy of life. At the end of the story, various questions often remain unanswered.

Nesser's 1998 novel Kim Novak badade aldrig i Genesarets sjö ( Kim Novak never bathed in the Sea of Galilee ) was made into a film in 2005 and has become school reading in many places in his home country.
