Van Veeteren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Van Veeteren is a by Swedish writer Håkan Nesser created fictional character of a book series of novels . The series comprises ten volumes and was published between 1993 and 2003. All volumes have also been published in German translations.

Location

The setting for the novels in the Van Veeteren series is a fictional European country with the capital Maardam. Place and person names as well as landscape descriptions cannot be clearly assigned. Northern Europe is mentioned several times in the novels. Some names and the currency guilder are reminiscent of the Netherlands, but there are also often German, Slavic or Baltic-sounding names and places, and more rarely those from the Romance-speaking area. Scandinavian locations were chosen for the films.

protagonist

The protagonist of the novel series is Van Veeteren, chief inspector of the Maardam police, in his late fifties, slightly overweight. He lives separately from his wife Renate. They have two grown children, daughter Jess and son Erich. Van Veeteren is constantly chewing toothpicks and occasionally smoking cigarillos and cigarettes. He regularly plays badminton with his colleague Commissioner Münster. He loves classical music and the game of chess. A characteristic of his way of working is that "as a commissioner, van Veteren has a pronounced hunting instinct and moral ambitions are not in the foreground". "He firmly believes that he is able to solve even the most difficult and obscure murder case."
