The well-known writer Max Schmeling receives a letter from his former schoolmate Tibor Schittkowski through his publishing house, of which he has no pleasant memories. In this letter, Tibor asks for a visit, Max owes him that, because after all, he had saved his life twice. Max can't remember that, but out of curiosity he sets out anyway. For Max, the trip to Tibor is a journey to the places of his youth. There are also fleeting encounters with almost forgotten acquaintances. Tibor, meanwhile seriously ill, asks Max to read a text. This is the life story of Tibor, which culminates in a murder. Tibor killed his lover's husband. This mistress Kristiana was also Max's childhood sweetheart. Tibor is sentenced to a long prison term for the murder. He never met his daughter, who was born during his imprisonment.

In the second part of the novel this daughter appears, it is Paula Polanski , the co-author of the novel. The game of confusion that began long ago is coming to a head. The blurb of the novel says that she is a German journalist who has chosen a pseudonym, the necessity of which is clear from reading the book.
