Taavi Soininvaara (born July 11, 1966 in Imatra , Finland) is a Finnish author of detective novels , who became known in Germany primarily for his stories about the SUPO investigator Arto Ratamo.

Suoyi graduated in 1991 with a degree in Law at the University of Turku and then worked as a business lawyer for several Finnish companies. He has been writing crime novels since 1997 and published his first novel Ebola-Helsinki in 2000 (English title: Finnish Blood ). It became such a great success that Soininvaara released all professional obligations in 2001 in order to devote himself entirely to writing. His second novel Inferno.fi ( Finnish Inferno ) was also a success and, like Ebola-Helsinki , has since been filmed in his home country.

Taavi Soininvaara's third work, Koston komissio ( Finnish Requiem ), was awarded the Finnish Crime Prize in 2003 and was also the author's first book to be published in Germany.

Ratamo crime novels

Since 2000 Soininvaara has published 11 novels about Arto Ratamo as the main character in Finland. In the first part, Finnish Blood , Arto still works as a scientist in the Office for Veterinary Medicine and Food Control before he moves to the Finnish Security Police SUPO. After his wife Kaisa was killed in the first novel, the now single father of a daughter starts a relationship with his colleague Riitta Kuurma. However, Riitta allows herself to be transferred to Europol in The Hague in Finnish Requiem , the third part of the series, and thus ends the relationship. Despite their departure from Helsinki, the two meet again and again in the course of the next books, although Arto finds a new partner in Ilona.

All novels are self-contained, but the same people around Arto Ratamo always play a role. The individual cases in the series mostly deal with scientific topics, the locations of which go beyond the borders of Finland and Scandinavia. In addition to the crimes to be investigated, Arto's worries and hardships as a single father and his other private and family relationships also play a not insignificant role. In Germany so far eight novels have been published in non-chronological order in the Aufbau publishing group , all of which were translated by Peter Uhlmann.
