The men's javelin throw at the 2016 European Athletics Championships was held on July 6th and 7th, 2016 in the Olympic Stadium in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam .

European champion was the Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais . He won ahead of the Czech world champion from 2013 , Olympic third from 2012 , European champion from 2012 and vice European champion from 2014 Vítězslav Veselý . Bronze went to the Finnish defending champion and Olympic runner-up in 2012 Antti Ruuskanen .

qualification

31 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 81.50 m. Seven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the five next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 80.70 m had to be achieved for the final.

Tero Pitkämäki, one of the most successful javelin throwers in recent years, missed the final with his 80.52 m by eighteen centimeters
